What is Interprofessional Education?
Interprofessional Education (IPE) is the practice of teamwork, communication, and collaboration among academic health care programs as a way to bridge the gap across disciplines, resulting in improved patient care.
At Baptist University, Interprofessional Education (IPE) is implemented through learning communities across academic disciplines and health care programs.
Why IPE?
- Introduces teamwork skills necessary in health care.
- Enhances student’s ability to teach and learn.
- Provides students the ability to apply what they have learned (classroom, lab, simulation, etc.).
- Provides an environment for faculty and students to share knowledge, skills, and expertise.
- Promotes information sharing in a team approach that focuses on patient-centered care.
- Improves communication and collaboration with the healthcare team to provide quality patient care.
Baptist University’s Interprofessional Education is Unique
- We are one of the few higher education institutions in the United States that has implemented IPE at the undergraduate level.
- All students are introduced to IPE and are encouraged to be involved through their professional program.
- IPE is on A continuum starting with a focus on inter-discipline/education and then moving on to professional courses.
All health care majors at Baptist University have opportunities to collaborate within professional disciplines. This can begin early on in general education courses to learn how interdisciplinary teams operate. Teamwork, communication and professional roles build toward an effective healthcare provider, ready to compete in a dynamic interprofessional health care environment.
