Black Men In White Coats

Black Men in White Coats

BHSU is the proud home of a joint undergraduate and graduate student chapter of Black Men in White Coats, a national organization that is dedicated to increasing the number of black males in the field of Medicine. The BHSU chapter mission is to increase the diversity of black males in all white coat healthcare professions, healthcare administration, and supporting areas of STEM.

Annually, BHSU HealthCORE hosts the Memphis Area Black Men in White Coat events which brings together healthcare professionals throughout the Mid-South to inspire middle school, high school, college and graduate students interested in pursuing healthcare careers. Each year we have professionals ranging from physicians, pharmacists, respiratory therapists and advanced practice practitioners to medical information technology, marketing, legal services and human resources. This event is free for students and includes a panel, mentoring program, vendors, lab demonstrations and more. The event uses age/school-level specific tracks so that participants can interact with other participants from the same age and school level during sessions.

Throughout the year, the chapter provides opportunities that introduce students to healthcare professionals, job opportunities, shadowing opportunities, mentorship programs, and opportunities to work with community organizations to advance their healthcare careers. The chapter also provides opportunities for health professional to network, gain training in mentoring, and other activities that advance their professional career.
