Members of the community and health care practitioners joined with Baptist team members in Southaven, Mississippi, to celebrate the opening of the Baptist Medical Group-Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) Clinic on Friday, Nov. 15. The OMM clinic is the only one in North Mississippi and West Tennessee, and the open house introduced osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) to the community. Clinic physicians are John C. Biery, DO; Regina K. Fleming, DO; Amanda L. Robinson, DO, MSA.Ed; Kelly Halma, DO; and John Voelpel, DO.

Dr. Biery spoke at the event, along with Robert Vest, chief operating officer of Baptist Medical Group; Hampton Hopkins, Ed.D., president of Baptist Health Sciences University (BHSU); Dr. Peter Bell, vice provost and dean of BHSU College of Osteopathic Medicine (BUCOM); and Dr. Anne Sullivan, chief academic officer, designated institutional official with Baptist Memorial Medical Education.

“We are excited to let our community know these services are now available,” said Dr. Biery. “OMT is a non-invasive, medication-free treatment using hands-on techniques to get to the root of a patient’s ailment.”

OMT focuses on the nervous system, muscles and joints to improve body movement and organ function for overall health and well-being. It uses gentle movement of the muscles, soft tissue and joints to restore balance in the body and treat a variety of issues, including breathing problems, bowel issues, swelling and sciatic nerve pain from pregnancy, chronic pain, repetitive stress injuries, musculoskeletal problems, anxiety and depression and sports injuries.

Baptist is also celebrating the recent approval of the Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (ONMM) residency at the clinic in partnership with BUCOM and Baptist Medical Group. This is the first such residency in the Mid-South. The first class is expected to start in July 2025.
