Baptist Health Sciences University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine makes its first appearance at Osteopathic Medical Education Conference in Orlando.

Baptist Health Sciences University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine (BUCOM) and its professors had a large and informative presence at this year’s Osteopathic Medical Education Conference (OMED), the largest annual conference of thousands of attendees including osteopathic physicians, medical students and other health care providers hosted by the American Osteopathic Association.

Dr. John Biery, chair and association professor of osteopathic principles and practice and program director of osteopathic neuromusculoskeletal medicine residency at BUCOM, attended OMED as an instructor and lecturer in the American Academy of Osteopathic Family Physicians’ osteopathic manipulative treatment next level workshop on headache treatment. He served as a table trainer assisting in the hands-on instruction for physicians who are maintaining and improving their skills in the use of osteopathic manipulative treatment. This course is approved for the Osteopathic Continuous Certification process for maintaining one’s Osteopathic Family Physician Board Certification.

Dr. Audrey Vasauskas, associate dean of research at BUCOM, and her inter-institutional research team shared their preliminary study results in a presentation entitled, “Pulmonary artery endothelial cells show evidence of potential endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition upon exposure to SARS-CoV spike protein. Dr. Vasauskas served as the principal investigator (PI) and her former student, Jeff Tomes, was the lead student researcher and poster presenter.

Dr. Elly Riley, chair of clinical services at BUCOM, sat in key lectures while also making important connections for BUCOM and its future students. She earned recognition towards Fellowship status, a mark of distinction for any physician, and obtained CME credit.

Dr. Regina Fleming, assistant dean of osteopathic principles and practice and of osteopathic neuromusculoskeletal medicine resident at BUCOM, attended the conference to receive CME credits and network with other osteopathic health care professionals. She also presented a poster on "OMT Alleviated Migraine-like Pain Via Blockade of Trigeminal Activation".

Dr. Peter Bell, vice provost and dean at BUCOM, served as an exhibitor alongside Dr. David Klink, senior associate dean for clinical affairs and professor of ophthalmology at BUCOM, and Dr. Cameron Conn, assistant dean of administration, operations and services at BUCOM. The three of them met with prospective students, prospective faculty, and other deans from across the country to promote BUCOM, discuss growth in the profession and new COM standards that will go into effect July 2024.

The BUCOM team attended the opening reception, many keynote presentations, committee meetings, the American Osteopathic Foundation Honors Gala, for which BUCOM was a sponsor, and medical school reunions and receptions held over the weekend.

Overall, OMED was a successful conference for BUCOM, and we look forward to 2024!
