In this Q&A, this Blue Healer shares insights into her educational experience, how it prepared her for real-world challenges, and offer valuable advice to current students. Read on to learn how BHSU has shaped Shania’s career and personal growth in the health care field.
Q: How has your transition from student to working surgical technologist been so far?
A: It has been great! As a student, I made connections and networked with a few people and they saw fit to have helped me in my desired department.
Q: What aspects of your training at BHSU have been most helpful in your day-to-day responsibilities in the operating room?
A: Clinical!! Just like every other profession at Baptist, surgical technology is very hands on, and I got a lot of that during clinical.
Q: What advice would you give to current students in the surgical technology program?
A: It’s going to get hard but it’s all about your mindset. Remember you can do ALL THINGS through Christ who strengthens you. Tap into that strength and add confidence to it!
Q: How has your first job experience as a surgical technologist met or differed from your expectations?
A: My first job has met my expectations, being able to figure out what specialty I wanted allowed me to get a head start on seeing what and who I’d be working with.
Q: How has your experience at BHSU prepared you for your career as a surgical technologist, both in terms of technical skills and professional readiness?
A: Well of course the courses I took helped me in every way but when it comes to professional as we know the university has classes for that contribute to those needs. Another thing that added to my professional was how involved I was on campus as the SGA president and having to encounter different people and students.
Shania’s story is a testament to the power of hands-on training, professional development, and a strong support network. We hope her experience inspires current and future students to persevere through challenges and trust in their abilities. BHSU continues to shape health care professionals ready to make a difference in the operating room and beyond.
